A local Scout group is looking for volunteers in a variety of roles, and across all age groups.
The 5th Melton Mowbray Scout Group is a vibrant, active group and is currently expanding, but needs additional leaders and helpers to get involved in planning and running programmes for the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts.
The group meets on Mondays during term time at Sandy Lane Methodist Church, and recently was very close to cancelling a Beavers meeting when leaders weren’t available.
Cancellation of evenings is a continous worry for the leaders as they have to follow the Scout Association strict safeguarding procedures meaning that cancelations of evening is inevitable for the group.
Group Scout leader Grady Hutton said: “As we put it on our website, we change lives by offering fun and challenging activities, unique experiences, everyday adventure and the chance to help others so that we make a positive impact in our community for everyone aged six plus.
“Becoming involved with Scouting helps children, young adults and adults to reach their full potential.
“Scouts develop skills including teamwork, time management, leadership, initiative, planning, communication, self-motivation, cultural awareness and commitment.
There are currently 64 children ranging from six to 14. In addition, there are young leaders (aged 14 – 17-years-old) who work alongside the adult leaders and helpers (aged 18 plus).
Recently activities included a chance to take a flight in a glider, arranged with Buckminster Gliding Club. Other trips have included an overnight camp at Alton Towers, giving the young people a unique opportunity to camp in the the centre of the theme park and enjoy the rides before the park opened to the general public.
Grady added: “These activities could be under threat unless volunteers step forward.
“You don’t have to commit to coming every week, we have a variety of roles and any help is welcomed. We want to give our young members the best opportunities we can.”
The 5th Melton Scout Group have several types of roles available to suit all levels of commitment, from occasional to weekly, such as young leaders, leaders and supporters. Any DBS checks are arranged via the group, and training is provided.
