A comedian set to perform at Melton Theatre next year has teamed up with the Noels Arms pub to showcase some of the best comics in the borough.
Melton’s Jon Pearson is running a competition for 10 people to win a crash course in stand-up comedy with the top two progressing to perform a five minute set with him at the start of his ‘I Am What I Am’ show at Melton Theatre on February 12.
Entrants with no prior stand-up experience need not fear as the competition is aimed at people who have never tried comedy before, but think they would enjoy taking centre stage.
Ten entrants will be picked at random to win a place on four stand-up comedy workshops, which will be led by Jon and some of his hilarious pals. The sessions will enable entrants to write a five minute stand-up set.
All participants will then get to perform their five minutes at a special Noels Arms comedy night, which will take place on January 31, 2016. At the end of the gig the two winners will be decided on by audience and judges votes.
Jon said: “I first learnt about the comedy and range of skills required to write a solid set through a Saturday course I took five years ago, and basically the insight and techniques it taught me still hold true today. I’ve created the sessions myself and they are crammed full of writing techniques and inside tips to give aspiring comedians the best start possible, plus the sessions are free, which is always a bonus.
“For me though, the most exciting bit is that the winners get to perform at two great venues, which wouldn’t normally be available to very new acts, let alone for their first nights. To have the Noels Arms with an audience of 50 plus and then do Melton Theatre, which holds 350, is pretty much unheard of. I think this is a great opportunity and hopefully a really fun experience for everyone involved.”
