A trio of touring music groups are helping to brighten the long humdrum nights of January in our villages this weekend.

Hose, Twyford and Long Clawson are all hosting groups, performing a variety of music, through the Centre Stage Touring scheme.

Classical ensemble Fordante, led by award-winning film composer Phil Mountford, kick things off on Saturday with a performance of From Strauss to the Movies at Hose Village Hall (7.30pm).

The critically-acclaimed ensemble of piano, oboe, violin, viola and cello perform a programme of music from the dance hall to the big screen, journeying through waltzes, polka, march, bolero and tango through to some of their own Venetian and Celtic-inspired music along with popular film soundtracks.

Call (01949) 860707 for details and tickets.

* There’s an evening of a cappella classics and comedy at Long Clawson Village Hall on Sunday (7.30pm) with Men In General.

Expect songs by Billy Joel, Lou Reed, Marvin Gaye, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Tom Jones and The Beach Boys.

For tickets, call (01664) 822247 or (01664) 822391, and for more details on the group, visit www.meningeneral.org.uk

* Over at Twyford Village Hall on Sunday, Brittany-based three-piece The Churchfitters perform their energetic show of rock, pop and jazz, mixed with traditional music (7.30pm).

The Anglo-French group play an astonishing array of instruments including fiddle, double bass, banjo and whistle for a fun evening of original songs and standards.
