Wyder Cup goes down to final day of Captain's weekender

Divided into two teams, representing the Captain and Vice Captain, the 40 players played Royal Cromer, Royal Norwich and Sheringham over the three days in a Ryder Cup matchplay format for the Melton Mowbray Golf Club Wyder Cup.

The first day’s Better Ball matchplay contest saw the Captain’s team in the lead 6-4.

Day two’s Canadian Foursomes match at Royal Norwich was reversed in favour of the Vice-Captain Ian Solloway and his team, winning 6-4.

There was everything to play for at Sheringham where the individual matchplay tussle was a fight to the end with the North Sea wind playing it’s part across the course.

The Captain’s team fell away against tough opposition, going down 12–8 and securing a win for the Vice-Captain’s team, 22-18 overall.

Next year’s event will be in Bradford with incoming Vice-Captain Glenn Price looking to retain the trophy.

On Sunday the club hosted the Leicestershire and Rutland Golf Union Champion of Champions competition.

Club champions from 24 of the county’s golf clubs took part in the scratch competition over 36 holes.

Hinckley’s Chris Brook was the Champion of Champions with a combined 142.

James Billingham was runner-up with 144 and Melton champion Sam Pollard secured third place with a combined 146.

Alan Smith won the Macmillan Spoons competition on Saturday, his 39 points saw him four clear of runner-up Kevin Rate and Phil Meade took third spot with 34 points.

The competition fund of £80 will be donated to the Macmillan Cancer Charity.

Melton Seniors completed a rare double over Scraptoft Golf Club in their final match of the season, winning 4–3 on the road.

Wins came from Captain and Vice-Captain Eddie Cham and Gerry Stephens by 3&1, Bob Luke and David Moss 3&2 and Vic Newham with Julian Kisiel 5&4.

Phil Millward and Ken Dimaline halved their game, along with Alan Terzza and Gwilym Jones.

The first Monday Morning Mingles of the winter season was played on Monday with a win for Tom Eadon and Liz Clark, carding a nett 33.2.

Newcomers Phil Millward and Sandie Normanton were second (nett 36.2) and John and Denise Waldron finished in third place (nett 38.0).

The best four ball came from Bob Luke, Cheryl Osborne, Tom Eadon and Liz Clark with nett 72.4
