Ian is doing a 12-month stint as a volunteer with the International NGO, Voluntary Services Overseas in Nigeria and has been using Skype to keep in touch with developments.

For the race’s 31st annual edition, the usual committee members will be supported on the night by Ian’s drinking pals Martin Coe and Ian Horn.

This year’s event will take place on Friday, July 8 with the walkers setting off at 7pm and the runners at 7.30pm from usual starting place just off the Melton road.

Registration on the night takes place at the village sports club from 5.30pm until 7pm sharp. The course is well signposted and has marshals at all major route changes.

The race follows a natural road course through undulating leafy lanes bordering the outskirts of the Stapleford Park Estate, and has a few challenging hills. The six-mile course record is just over 30 minutes and has stood for several years.

Advance entries can be made online at www.grainstorebrewery.com/shop-window or via a form from the White Lion pub, in Whissendine.
