Stilton Striders Running Club held their annual awards dinner at Belvoir Alehouse where members were rewarded for their 2014 efforts.
The male and female runner of the year trophies went to Jason Barton and Abi Arnott, reflecting their racing success and overall contribution to the club. Veteran runner of the year went to John Houghton, for his ever-improving race times in mountain, fell and road racing events.
Most improved runner was a keenly-fought category and went to Ben Pickard for his improvement over all distances, including a sub-four-hour marathon debut.
The club received two places in next year’s London Marathon and awarded these to Wayne Hackett and Darren Glover, who will join a number of other Striders at the start line on April 26.
Club standard awards went to Jason Barton (gold), Neil Jaggard (silver), Vicki Lowe (silver), Ben Pickard (bronze) and Shane Sharkey (bronze). Shane also took home trophies for 100 per cent LRRL racing, the club’s annual handicap race and the inaugural Strider Cup.
The Clubperson of the Year award was decided through a vote by the entire club membership and proved a close-run thing between Rob Beers, Ian Johnson, Mike Bryan and Shane Sharkey.
Each gave significant time and effort to helping others in 2014, but Shane again lifted the trophy.
For those looking to start running, or returning after a long absence, free beginners’ sessions start at 6.30pm on Monday, January 5 from Melton Council’s Parkside offices.
