Stilton Striders brave big freeze and testing hills

Have your say

SIX members of Stilton Striders battled the elements and the hilly course at last weekend’s Kibworth 6 Winter League race.

The course, which is renowned for its hills, proved even more of a challenge than usual in sub-zero temperatures and with snow in the air.

Paul Kerr was again the first Strider home in 36min 57secs followed by Greg Pettingill who ran an impressive 40.40 in his return for the club.

Richard Gray (42.17), Ian Mason (50.30) and Richard Angrave (69.58) completed the men’s team. The sole lady Strider was Sally Renwick who ran a second personal best in a fortnight with 70.28, knocking more than five minutes off her previous six-mile best time.

l Mike Brighty was the lone Stilton Strider joining the 400 runners who braved freezing conditions on Sunday for the eighth annual Newton’s Fraction half-marathon.

The race started at the South Kesteven Sports Stadium, in Grantham, and joined the Grantham to Nottingham Canal towpath to Woolsthorpe-by-Belvoir, taking in two very testing hills along the way before returning back to the stadium for a grandstand finish.

Mike continued his marathon preparations by finishing in 1hr 51min 27secs for 226th place.
