Injury and half-term holidays meant Melton RFC Under 16s lined up with some key players for the visit of rivals Oakham and kicked off with only 14.
The game was going to be an uphill battle with many of the Melton team playing out of their normal positions, and the home side started under pressure, but defended well on their try line.
An offside infringement gave Oakham a penalty which they kicked for a 3-0 lead.
The visitors continued to pile on the pressure and despite valiant defending by Melton, crossed for the game’s opening which was converted.
The home side were playing fluently with clean passing through quick hands, notably link-up play from Golland and Garnett, but Oakham scored another try to move into a 15-0 lead.
Sommerville was key in defence for Melton, playing his normal disruptive game and preventing Oakham from scoring again, while Dixon put in some heroic tackles.
In the second half, Sommerville held up an Oakham player on the line to stop yet another try and Boylan put in some critical defensive tackles, but Oakham scored another converted try.
The Rutland side managed to score two further tries, converting one, but despite the scoreline, Melton fought on valiantly and kept their heads held high.
They were finally rewarded with a try when Dixon crossed for the final word in a 34-5 defeat.
