Melton RFC under 10s capped their season with a superb runners-up spot at the county cup last weekend.
Faced with a tough opening match against the favourites, Melton began strongly, denying Hinckley any ball and competed aggressively at the breakdown which earned them the opening try. Good tackling then forced a turnover, allowing Melton to race down the field and score a fantastic second try.
Hinckley scored a disputed try after the break, but continued strong defence and aggressive rucking stopped further attacks and earned Melton a 2-1 win.
In the second game Melton faced a confident Syston team buoyed by a 7-0 victory. A rallying call from coach Neil Bowles inspired Melton whose tackling and competitive edge was the difference with the teams.
Syston had lots of possession but Melton defended well and again turned on the style with aggressive running with ball in hand to crash over for the opening try. With Syston deflated, Melton added another try to seal a 2-0 win.
This set up a cup final against hosts Market Harborough which began at a frantic pace with neither side giving anything away,
Harborough moved the ball across the whole width of the pitch, overstretching Melton’s defence to score out wide.
Melton hit back with strong runs, but the home defence stood firm and turned the ball over. After a series of attacks Harborough made it 2-0.
Melton heads went down and the hosts scored again straight from the restart.
The visitors launched several attacks with fantastic clearing out at the breakdown, but failed to cross and in the dying moments Harborough pinched another try.
Melton’s coaches were very pleased and proud of the team’s achievements throughout the season.
