Melton RFC Under 8s fielded three teams at the Nuneaton Festival where 12 teams competed in four groups of three.
The Tigers and newly-formed Barbarians were drawn in the same group and the Tigers topped it after edging out their club-mates. The Barbarians finished third and went on to beat the hosts in their third-place play-off.
The Lions drew their first game and lost to eventual finalists Syston A before rallying to win their third-place play-off against Ashby C.
The Tigers outplayed Derby in the quarter-finals, but the semi was a much tighter affair, pipping Ashby A on the first try rule after the match was drawn.
In an end-to-end final, fierce local rivals Syston A drew first blood and after some fantastic play, both sides traded tries.
The scores were tied at full-time, and remained so after four minutes of extra time which brought two further tries per side.
After the referee called for the next try as the winner, the Melton coach switched tactics. Syston were caught out and had loaded their players to prevent a run from Melton’s number 10, allowing Owen Griffiths free to bolt down the line and score the crucial try.
With excellent sportsmanship the Melton teams were also awarded the fair play trophy.
The club wishes to thank all of the families who went along to support, the coaching staff of Paul, Tim and Bill and the brilliant performances from the boys.
