Melton RFC Under 7s capped their campaign with silverware at the Syston Festival.
The day began well with victory against Coalville which was enough to get them through to the play-offs as group leaders after a no-show by Stoneygate.
A hard-fought, high quality play-off against Market Bosworth ended in a draw, but having scored the first try, Melton were declared the winners.
The coaches were worried that a wait of more than an hour before the semi-final might affect the players’ focus, but after a well-earned rest they demolished Leicester Forest East, 14-10.
Box and Greaves were on top form, but all the boys scored tries in an impressive display of rugby to set up a final against the mighty South Leicester. After an inspirational pep talk by coach Wayne Greaves, Melton threw themselves into the game, and at half-time the teams were neck and neck with few errors from either side.
At the final re-start with just 10 seconds to go, Melton showed great strength and skill to run in a last-gasp try, but with the clock against them, South Leicester won 10-9, and Melton were awarded the semi-final cup.
A great festival to round off a first season of competitive rugby. After a fortnight of success for Melton’s mini teams, their opponents will have them firmly in their sights next season.
