Hurrell is forced to retire

Rugby star Will Hurrell has announced his retirement from rugby union after suffering what is believed to be a stroke.

The Melton-born centre has called time on his 11-year career with immediate effect.

“After speaking with specialists, I’ve been advised that I can’t engage in any contact sports,” Hurrell told the BBC.

“It’s been a really challenging year for me personally, but I accept this is the right decision for me and my family.”

Hurrell, 30, suffered a head injury during the Premiership game with Leicester Tigers on January 5, replaced in the 54th minute of the Premiership clash by Luke Morahan.

At the time it was believed he was suffering from concussion.

But after being taken to hospital it was later believed he suffered a probable stroke.

Hurrell made four appearances for Leicester Tigers between 2099 and 2011, including one Premiershio contest against Northampton.

He then moved to London Welds, and then to Coventry and Bedford Blues.

Hurrell made 28 appearances for Doncaster Knights in the Championship during their 2015-16 campaign before moving to Bristol as they were promoted to the Premiership in 2016.

He made 68 appearances for Bristol in a four-year spell, which included a loan stint with Bath.
