Top class Melton RFC U13s dominate Spalding

Have your say

Melton began well at a blustery rain-soaked Spalding and were ahead after just five minutes thanks to a superb try by Con Foster who side-stepped three defenders before crashing over.

Tom Page’s conversion gave Melton an early 7-0 lead.

The forwards totally dominated Spalding and time and time again smashed their advances. George Backus-Griffin and Aled King were immense and Will Kay continues to get stronger.

Another great backs move allowed flying full-back Max Gilbert to show the hosts a clean pair of heels and touch down for another try. The conversion was a formality for Page (14-0).

With the wind at Melton’s backs, Foster’s quick-thinking spotted the Spalding forwards advancing and he kicked over their heads. He then chased upfield to retrieve the ball and put Archie Heaney in for another try.

Despite a tough angle, Page again knocked the conversion over to put Melton 21-0 up at half-time.

A tough second half was expected, playing into a strong wind, but Melton coped well and despite conceding a try in the first five minutes they dug deep and again showed their superior fitness.

The second half became the Page show as he scored three great solo tries and converted all of them to seal a stunning 42-5 victory.

Captain Backus-Griffin led by example and took a well-deserved man-of-the-match award in an impressive team display, while Spalding voted for Page as their man-of-the-match.
