Melton rugby fan Charlie Mills showed how seriously he took his World Cup mascot duties by learning Romanian.

Charlie (11) was selected to be one of Land Rover’s Rugby World Cup 2015 official mascots and was asked to lead out Romania for their Pool D match with Canada at the King Power Stadium.

The Melton RFC player walked out with the teams and then lined up in front of the Romania XV for the national anthems.

But he was keen to welcome his adopted side properly.

“My uncle’s girlfriend is half-Romanian, half-Greek so that worked out well and they had been helping me with some Romanian,” he said.

“I said ‘hello’ to the Romanian captain when I walked out, and then said ‘good luck, you can do it’, and then he ruffled my hair.”

As Charlie took his seat in the stands, he then saw the skipper, Mihai Macovei, score two late tries as his side came back from 15-0 down to win 17-15.

The late rally capped a memorable day.

He added: “When we arrived we had a walk around and went onto the pitch so we knew where to go.

“Then we got the chance to look at the World Cup which was at the stadium, I’ve been dreaming that I’ll be holding it one day.

“When I stood there waiting for the players to come out I was a bit nervous, I just saw the camera coming towards me and I pretended I hadn’t noticed it!”
