Melton RFC Under 11s wrap up Kesteven double

Melton RFC Under 11s continued their preparations for the season-defining Land Rover Cup in windy conditions at Kesteven on Sunday.

The visitors soon showed their good, confident form when full-back Dorsett made a solid catch inside his own 22 and returned the ball 40 metres with a clever, weaving run to touch down under the posts.

Moments later, he scored again after fine work from Neath and Mills, the latter drawing the defence brilliantly before his perfectly-timed pass sent Dorsett clear in the corner.

Neath scored himself in the first half with a pacy solo effort after Hardman used his sheer strength and clever body position to puncture a belligerent defence.

Melton’s tackling and rucking was exemplary, but handling errors meant the scoreline didn’t reflect their dominance. Complacency and a lack of concentration handed Kesteven two simple second half tries before Dorsett completed his hat-trick to seal a 5-2 win.

Changes for both sides produced a much closer-fought second game as the hosts brought on big players who posed much more of a physical threat.

Neath’s penetrating run was the only difference between the two sides in the first half, and impressive forward play and tremendous rucking from Hardy, Hardman and Tilson, in the second half restricted Kesteven to just one try-scoring chance. But determined defence held up Kesteven’s biggest forward over the try line.

Quick thinking and great body position from Thorpe sealed a 2-0 win with Ford and Sharpe effective in disrupting several attacks.
