In-form Melton RFC U16s made it three wins from three with a 38-7 win at Long Eaton.

Early pressure from the home side kept Melton camped in their own 22 for the first quarter. Beesley led the visitors’ stout defence from the front with his tenacity at the breakdown earning Melton two penalties in quick succession, and allowing Gumby to clear.

The resulting lineout steal by Foldys allowed Melton’s backs to finally get their hands on the ball, and slick passing gave Owens the chance to burst through and score.

The momentum swung Melton’s way with the forwards pushing hard and creating clean ball for scrum-half Beesley who threw a dummy pass before crossing the line. Gumby converted.

Golland left the Long Eaton defence trailing to score Melton’s third try, Gumby adding the extras, and Dixon broke two tackles to sprint deep into the hosts’ half before setting up Smith to score in the corner. Gumby’s conversion made it 26-0 at half-time.

Second half injuries to Long Eaton players led to uncontested scrums and the game lost its shape, but Melton kept up the pressure and excellent handling resulted in Gumby’s converted try.

J. Garnett evaded several tackles before delivering a perfect pop pass for Green to score between the posts with Gumby converting once more.

Long Eaton’s winger scored a deserved late try that was duly converted.

A big thank you to Melton’s Jakes who made up the numbers for Long Eaton in the first half.
