Melton RFC Under 13s fought back from a 21-point deficit to grab a thrilling win on Sunday morning.

The game started badly for Melton as missed tackles cost them time and again, and they were soon two tries down.

A stunning lineout take and burst down the wing saw Adam Atton score a brilliant solo try as Melton trailed 19-10 at half-time.

Despite a severe talking-to at the break, matters got worse with a breakaway try before more missed tackles gifted Belgrave another try, leaving Melton with a huge mountain to climb at 31-10 down.

The recovery and effort was stunning as they hit the rucks hard and smashing big opponents back. Their fitness also came to the fore as Melton’s speed merchant Con Foster beat three defenders and crossed for a try.

More great work from George Backus-Griffin and Aled King secured hard-won ball for the backs who fed man-of-the-match Archie Heaney. He side-stepped, battled and crashed over for another deserved try (31-22).

Louie Fletcher, Will Kay, James Boles and the whole squad heaped on the pressure, forcing a scrum which Melton dominated.

Stan Chell’s quick thinking saw him smash through a gap and touch down to bring Melton within two points.

Pre-season training kicked in as Belgrave began to tire with Melton first to every ball and dominating.

Heaney again scrapped for the ball and despite being taken out at neck height he crashed over to put his team ahead at 34-31.

Melton weren’t finished as the backs shipped the ball from one side of the pitch to the other. This created space for Harry Britton who ignored options out wide and battled his way to the line to clinch victory.

Coach Bren Foster said: “Every member of the squad played a vital part in our first-ever win which we will never forget.

“It was a team performance to be proud of.”
