Melton RFC Under 11s’ final home game of the season turned into a celebration of the squad’s improvement as Mellish were well beaten.
Melton made an explosive start as Cropper ran with pace and purpose before his great offload to Dickson saw the scrum-half score the opening try.
This was quickly followed by a tremendous Hardman run and perfectly-timed pass for Dorsett to cut inside on a good line and score under the posts.
The hosts produced some of their best fluent rugby when Dorsett’s penetrating run, Cropper’s good hands, and Neath’s pace took him in at the corner for a 3-0 half-time lead.
There was no let-up after the break as Dickson’s clever interception and brilliant solo run from inside his own half saw him score unopposed.
Two quick tries from Neath made it 6-0, Tilson playing a key role in setting up both.
But the biggest cheer came for a move involving most of Melton’s forwards. Great commitment from Snodin and Walpole, and a bulldozing run and brilliant offload from Hardman allowed Thorpe to drive over, despite the attentions of two tacklers.
Mills chipped in with a sparkling moment of his own, a mazy 60-yard solo run to beat three defenders and score from deep inside his own half. A comprehensive 9-0 win was sealed when Knott took advantage of a defensive slip to nick the ball and dive over for a popular score.
Confidence is now sky-high ahead of Sunday’s County Cup as Melton aim to retain the Shield.
