Melton RFC Seconds fell to a disappointing defeat at Loughborough following their fine win over South Leicester seven days earlier.

The visitors started well, exerting pressure in the scrum and putting the opposition on the back foot. And they got their reward with a penalty try converted by Mathews to make it 7-0.

But that was about the only positive part of the first half as good hands allowed Loughborough to draw level at 7-7.

Melton created turnovers in defence, but they couldn’t build an attack as the hosts stretched their lead to 17-7 with two further tries.

Attewell came on at half-time and added a bit of forward momentum which led to an attacking scrum from which Melton forced their second penalty try, again converted by Mathews (17-14).

Working the ball from the back of a dominant pack, W. Brooks picked up and gained many yards, but lack of support and protection of the ball in the rucks and mauls saw Melton turned over as Loughborough turned defence into attack.

A quickly-taken lineout caught Melton out as the hosts squeezed over in the corner for a 22-14 lead. Loughborough added a final converted try when they the ball moved through the hands to cap a 29-14 win.

Loughborough ‘s victory owed much to their plan to avoid an arm wrestle with Melton’s pack and move the ball at every opportunity.

Melton must improve and show more application if they want to progress in the Second Team Cup on Saturday.
