Melton RFC Seconds were punished for failing to take their chances as they slipped to defeat in Loughborough on Saturday.

Loughborough edged a match between two evenly-matched sides by protecting their own ball better and taking the couple of opportunities they had with two well-taken tries.

Melton defended well under a lot of pressure, but their lineout did not function well in the first half and they gifted possession to the home side. The visitors tackled well, but could not control the breakdown.

Loughborough went ahead with a try from an attacking scrum, but straightaway Melton came back and pressurised the home try line without being able to exert enough pressure to get the score.

Debutants Parton and Cowey looked useful additions and the visitors were pleased to see Hayward back after injury.

Melton were dominant in the scrum and did get some go forward for Clemmons and Farrish to bring the backs into the game, but they could just not turn chances into tries.

They were made to pay when Loughborough took the game away with a second try and a conversion.

Melton must learn the lessons from this defeat in time for Saturday’s league encounter.
