Melton performed much better than the previous week as the pack outplayed Syston, especially in the scrum.

In the ruck the home side protected the ball well and caused Syston to transgress on several occasions at the ruck.

Peters, Clemmons and Broughton all contained the Syston backs, while the back three of Parton, Forfar and Harper put in some try-saving tackles.

The home side defended well as Syston tried to prise open the defence in an even opening 15 minutes, but eventually the visitors outflanked Melton to score out wide.

It was a good end-to-end game and Melton moved in front when Meakin quickly took the ball deep into Syston’s 22 and the ball was recycled for Jeremiah to sail through for a try converted by Harper.

By now Melton were exerting plenty of pressure in the forwards as pick and drives by Meakin, Broughton and Cowey stretched Syston.

Their scrum was forced backwards and the back row of Brookes, Chambers and Evans fed off it as Melton held the momentum going into half-time.

It came as no surprise when Syston switched to non-contested scrums immediately after half-time and, with a good platform available to their backs, began to stretch Melton who defended well.

Webster made two useful breaks and Hayward took the ball up, giving the pack a target to drive, but they couldn’t rediscover the pressure they had in the first half.

Stewart, Pawley, Corvin, Martarano, Prior and Kasmarczyk came on to add fresh legs, but Syston went 8-7 up with a penalty.

Peters came from nowhere to produce a try-saving tackle into touch inches from the line, but from the ensuing lineout, Melton missed the catcher and Syston crossed again to cap an entertaining game.
