Melton RFC Second XV end season with Skegness victory

The bracing sea air suited Melton as they finished their season in emphatic style on Saturday with a good all-round display against a team bolstered by several first team players.

The visitors dominated the scrum against a heavyweight pack as Melton got into their stride quickly. Good inter-passing saw Martorano go over in the corner, and with Farrish bringing his centres onto the ball, Freestone crashed through the defence to score close to the posts. Farrish converted.

The lineout was working well with Evans, Haywood and Maghee winning good ball, and from a scrum following a lineout drive, Coghill dummied the defence and drove over for a try.

The referee awarded the hosts a disputed penalty try, which was converted, to reduce Melton’s lead to 17-7.

But just before half-time, Attewell broke through the defence and squeezed over in the corner.

Melton also dominated the second half which turned into the number eight show with Coghill adding two more tries to complete his hat-trick.

Maghee then switched to eight and also scored.

A vicious storm broke up play, but Melton kept up the pressure and Farrish thundered over and added two more conversions to take Melton beyond the 50-point mark.

The Seconds have played attractive rugby since gathering a settled team since Christmas, and also helped develop youngsters Haywood, Evans and Broughton, while Peters played well wherever skipper Greaves asked him to.
