Melton RFC Under 16s were back to almost full-strength with three substitutes for their visit to one of the county’s strongest sides, Lutterworth, on Sunday.

The home side were first on the scoreboard when they broke through Melton’s defence for a converted try, but the visitors responded with a passage of play which rocked Lutterworth.

Excellent work by the pack produced a second brace of tries in a week for Thompson before Goward powered over for another score.

Gunby used his football skills to great effect to chase down scrum-half Beesley’s box kick and a fortunate bounce allowed him to kick and chase before scoring between the posts. Heaney converted.

Lutterworth’s coaches tore into their players which seemed to jolt them back into contention as weak tackling allowed the hosts two tries before the break, but Melton still led 22-17.

The second half was an edgy affair with both sides trying desperately to break each other’s defence.

Lutterworth were the first to strike when their pacy backs found a gap in Melton’s defence to take back the lead.

Johnson led the way with two try-saving tackles before the visitors hit back.

From turnover ball, Melton’s backs skilfully worked the ball from one side of the pitch to the other, stretching the Lutterworth defence before Sommerville ran in from the halfway line, fending off a tackle and winning the foot race to score the decisive converted try (29-24).

Both sets of supporters showed their appreciation at full-time as Melton completed a fine double.
