The dads got the better of the lads as Egerton Park Under 13s played their annual end-of-season challenge match.

The junior team, who had beaten local rivals Melton the previous weekend, finished their campaign against their parents as part of the Waitrose-sponsored ECB Open Day.

Glover and Barnard opened for the U13s and scored steadily until the latter was run out by Haffenden. This brought in Barber who added a quickfire 12 before both he and Glover were told by their parents to let others have a go.

Out came Pope and Pedlar, the latter bowled by Pope, and like the other batsmen Pope Jnr was asked to leave the field for looking too comfortable.

Creed came out and was run out quickly after his dad told him there was a second run.

T. Garnett was bowled by Watchorn Snr, while Rodenby and Haffenden both retired to allow N. Garnett and Hughes to form the final partnership. Hughes was caught behind by Haffenden as the boys finished on 112.

The boys moved the boundary markers back to the full-pitch size for the reply, but undeterred, Haffenden and Rodenby opened the batting.

Rodenby fell to a fantastic catch by square leg umpire Madden, bringing in Creed who scored at a fair rate. Watchorn was asked to retire on eight before Pedlar was run out by a direct hit from the other umpire Glover.

Ellis launched some big hits in his 13 before he was caught by Haffenden off Barnard, and Pope was cleaned bowled by Ellis Jnr for one.

Club chairman David Glover hobbled his way out and scored 20, but Garnett didn’t trouble the scorers, bowled Barber second ball, and Hughes was also soon on his way for nought.

Pedlar returned to the crease and was run out off a wide by his son, but Rodenby re-joined the contest and completed the victory.
