Burrough League Division One

Barkby First XI won by 96 runs

The opening Burrough League fixture paired Barkby’s first team against their clubmates and last year’s Division Two champions.

After the Firsts won the toss and batted, Ghorecha and Moore began well against the bowling of Johnson and Keightley, both piercing the in-field with some well-timed shots.

Ghorecha was quick to punish anything loose and made 42 before he was well caught, off Keightley, by Hollis. Keightley broke through again two balls later when Moore (17) was caught by Mount.

Waplington (41 not out) and I. Kirk (54 not out) set about re-building the innings with good running between the wickets and both scored freely late on to post an unbroken 101-run stand for a total of 169-2.

Pick of the bowlers was Johnson, who only went at six an over, and Keightley with 2 for 56.

The Seconds lost two early wickets in reply, Pook (4) bowled by Hollis, and Eales (1) run out by a direct hit from Flowers.

Opener Lever consolidated the innings and was supported well by Johnson (9) before he finally fell for an excellent 31 as the wickets continued to tumble around him.

Flowers and Hollis took two wickets each, while Bartram, J. Kirk, Tebbatt and Moore all claimed one as the seconds were all out in the final over for 73.
