Ups and downs for Melton Tennis Club

A Lawn Tennis Assocation roadshow will take place in Horsham on Wednesday

Melton Mowbray Tennis Club’s senior and junior teams got back into action following the holiday break with a mixed bag of results.

The men’s first team hosted a two-man Charnwood team and ran out 6-2 winners to keep themselves in the hunt for the Division One title.

Scores: T. Rowe/J. Elliss won 6-2, 6-1; won 6-0, 6-0. L. Smith/T. Ellis lost 4-6, 5-7; won 6-0, 6-0.

* The men’s second team visited Birstall Firsts in Division Four and shared the spoils in a four-hour marathon match which included three tie-break sets.

Skipper Jason Wheatley and Neil Johnson teamed up to take their first match in a 7-6, 7-6 nailbiter, before narrowly losing their second rubber.

Jake Beagle and Tom Dryell turned in a solid performance and drew both of their matches to earn the draw.

* A blistering performance saw the men’s third team whitewash unbeaten Leicester University in Division 10.

Scores: J. Sturmey/J. Wheatley won 6-0, 6-0; won 6-2, 6-1. J. Beagle/N. Johnson won 6-3, 6-1; won 6-2, 6-0.

* The ladies’ first team travelled to Charnwood Seconds for their Division One match and went down 5-3.

Charlie Griffin and Lauren Trigg collected two sets and skipper Jess Gadsby and Ellie Jenkins took the other.

* The club’s 12s and under boys’ A team got their Winter League Division Two league matches under way at home to Grangewood TC and went down 4-2 in a match of many long rallies, played in a superb spirit.

Ben Greening lost out 6-3, 6-3 in a tight match with Sam Bradley before Lucas Townend levelled it up with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Daniel Yardanov.

The deciding doubles went the way of the Grangewood pair 6-0, 6-4.
