Melton HC Fourth XI completed their league season with a deserved victory in an entertaining game against Loughborough Sixth XI.
The home side’s usual mixture of youth and experience started well with youngsters Anthony Pedlar (man-of-the-match) and Joe Harris acquitting themselves well at full-back.
In midfield, debutant Justin Harris slotted in well with his enthusiasm complementing the experience of Hunn and Shelton.
Up front Adam Wells was having a fine game, setting up several chances for Eden, Zak Whitaker and Michael Frew, and Melton went ahead when Wells followed up Frew’s shot to sweep the ball home.
At the other end, keeper Sam Harris had to pull off some crucial saves to maintain the lead.
The second half continued at a furious pace with Melton forcing several penalty corners.
From one, Melton increased their lead when Shelton followed up Hunn’s crisp strike to slot the ball home.
However, Loughborough attacked strongly and with Weatherdon and Snow exposed for pace at the back they pulled a goal back.
This led to several anxious moments for Melton, but they clinched the result with the goal of the match. Snow’s free-hit found Wells in acres of space and his driving run and pass found Shelton who flicked the ball into the roof of the net.
Loughborough did score a late consolation, but Melton were played out the final moments in their opponents’ half to ease to an encouraging win. Melton’s youngsters have matured well this season and show real promise for the future.
