After opening the season with a heavy defeat at North Notts, Melton Hockey Club First XI produced a much better display to thrash Coalville Seconds 9-0.

A couple of old faces returned for the East Midlands Division One clash, and it wasn’t long before veterans Creed and Davies were making headway in the visitors’ defensive area.

Melton opened the goal tally when a blind pass down the right from Davies allowed Sibun to slot in his first.

Then, moments later, Sibun himself teed up Creed for a tap-in.

Hewitt had several attempts at his first goal after a penalty corner broke down, but he finally found an opening to chip in the third.

Melton had no problems moving the ball around in all areas of the park as Coalville struggled for opportunities to get into threatening positions.

A wayward pass gave Melton captain Brooks the chance to collect the ball and feed Pollard who helped Hewitt to his second of the afternoon.

Coalville did find the hosts napping to fire off a few shots at goal, but keeper Eden had them covered.

A fast breakaway had Sibun again racing down the right and he was rewarded with a second with a sliding finish.

The second half brought more of the same as Courtman, Judge and Brown made headway from defence, and Pollard and Davies covered lots of ground in midfield to allow Melton to create more chances.

Brooks again closed down a pass and found Creed whose trademark shot completed his hat-trick.

Moments later Taylor was gifted space in the area and slammed the ball past the keeper’s ear.

Sibun’s pace was too much for the visitors and he claimed his second before helping Hewitt to his hat-trick after some quick passing around the area as Melton responded impressively to their previous loss.

They will be keen to repeat this goalscoring display on Saturday when they host Berkswell Common at Burton Road.

Melton: Eden, Courtman, Judge, Brown, Sibun, Hewitt, Pollard, Brooks, Cramphorn, Taylor, Davies, Creed.
