Melton First XI started well and were passing the ball fluidly into midfield and creating gaps in the Silhillian defence.
But they fell behind when, having defended a penalty corner well, the ball was played across goal and found an attacker at the far post who had an easy tap-in.
Melton rallied and began to play patient hockey with Snow and Brooks in the middle combining well, but despite some good attacks they could not find the net and the hosts scored again.
Their best chance of the first half fell to Judge who saw his initial short corner strike saved, and then skewed his follow-up shot wide, before Brooks missed an opportunity to finish a slick attack.
Melton were on the end of some strange decisions in the second half and had a Hewitt goal disallowed, but they continued to battle.
With the opposition sitting back, the Firsts found more space and their resilience paid off when Kendall squared the ball to Sibun whose reverse-stick drag under his shoulder put the ball through the keeper’s legs to bring the score to 2-1.
But it proved too-little, too-late, and despite their best efforts, Melton could not find the equaliser.
