Mick Cavani returned an outstanding nett 63 to win the second round of the President’s Putter at Melton Golf Club on Saturday.
His seven-under handicap round was three shots better than runner-up Tony South’s nett 66 and nudged him up to fifth overall in the two-week aggregate standings.
Ray Smith was third with nett 68, and Sam Pollard shot a level gross 70 to pick up the best Gross prize.
Two’s sweep: Steve Goddard, Andy Pedlar, Phil Millward, Tom Eadon, Bev Blake, Brian Haines, Tim Buxton, Mick Pollard, Neil Eaves.
The overall President’s Putter winner was Andy Pedlar with a combined 140 (69+71), securing the top prize on countback from Bev Blake (68+72). Countback also decided the next two places with Matt Catton (70+71) taking third from Dougie Bryce (68+73).
* The fifth and final round of the Compton Cup was won by Malcolm Farrow on countback from Colin Kitchen after both shot nett 71.
Scott Cartwright was third with nett 72 on countback from Nigel Blunt who won the Compton Cup with an aggregate points total of 72.
The score was accumulated over five of the Major Trophy rounds played this season, and was 14 points clear of nearest rival Cliff Daulby.
* The Club hosted The Belvoir Brewery Senior Summer Open last Thursday With the course and greens in superb condition.
A field of 132 players took part with sponsors Belvoir Brewery donating a bottle of Melton Red Beer for each competitor and supplying two of the prizes.
The betterball stableford format produced some excellent scores as Eddie Cham and Gwilym Jones won overall with 48 points.
Jim Dobbin and Adrian Grant were second with 45, one clear of Bob Purkis and Dave Moss who took third place on countback from A. Down and P. Gibson. Dave Bailey and Vince King were fifth with 43, while Dave Moss won nearest the pin on the 14th and R. Pope shot the longest drive on the 11th.
