Melton Mowbray Golf Club relaunched the Invitation Day competition, led by this year’s captain Jack Inguanta and assisted by lady captain Liz Snow.
The event was well supported by members and guests as both the men and ladies played in a morning and afternoon shotgun start betterball competition.
The morning winners were Karl Goodacre and Bev Blake with 40 points on countback from Callum Relf and Andrew Skerratt. The club skipper and Pete Higgins were just a point back in third.
Geoff Townsend and Mezz Watchorn took the afternoon honours, again with 40 points on countback from Tim Mortimer and D. Todd. Owen Cook and Alan Swindley completed the top three, also with 40 points.
The ladies’ winners were lady captain Liz and Sheila Plant with 34 points from Denise Waldron and Avis Webb (32pts).
Nearest the pin prizes at the 14th went to Melita Copley (morning) and Mezz Watchorn (afternoon).
* The rain poured all day as the club hosted their Senior Spring Open, but despite the conditions some excellent scores were returned in the betterball format.
The Melton pairing of Jim Dobbin and Barrie Hubbard won with a superb score of 46 points, five clear of runners-up Glenn Price and Ken Longbottom.
Ken Claxon and Gary Waterfield were third with 40.
Other prizes – Over 70s drive (6th): Mike Wilson; Under 70s longest drive (8th): Gary Hallam; Over 70s nearest the pin (16th): Robert Barnes; Under 70s nearest the pin (7th): Jim Dobbin.
* Richard South won the men’s Sunday medal with a two-under handicap nett 68, two shots better than Simon Alcott who was second on countback from Dave Poolan. Kieran Foster’s round of 73 won the best gross prize.
Twos sweep: Kieran Foster, Ian Blunt, Alex Fairbrother, Brendan Boyce, Steve Goddard, Jevan Goddard.
* Melton Mowbray’s B team played the second of their league fixtures last Wednesday against Breedon Priory.
Persistent rain made playing conditions very difficult and Melton suffered a narrow defeat to Breedon who are rapidly becoming a bogey team for Melton.
Winning Melton pairs: Stephen Draisey/Dr John Harvey 3 and 2, Steve Wright/Neil Eaves 6 and 5.
