Melton Golf Club: Autumn Trophy race under way

The first round of the annual Autumn Trophy series got under way with 47 members turning out at Melton Golf Club

The trophy is played for over six rounds with one each month through to March with each player’s best four scores added together to find the trophy winner.

Using a shotgun start, competitors were drawn into teams and points awarded for where they finish.

The team of Dave Poolan, Kris Own, Danny Raven and Dick Chapman took the first round honours from runners-up Steve Goddard, Keith Tomblin, Richard Haines and Dave Timbrell, with Ian Townsend, Anthony Halls, David Taylor and JP O’Reilly in third.

Jamie Orton claimed the nearest-the-pin prize, and the second round will take place on Sunday.

* A Fourball Yellowball competition took place, with the yellow ball counting double and moving to each player in rotation.

Mick Curtis, Steve Goddard, Mezz Watchorn and Phil Curtis won with a nett total of 141, six shots clear of runners-up David Stroud, Russell Freeman, Daryl Clater and Les Stroud.

Richard South, Billy Kevan, Chris Radford and Paul Heaver came in third with 132.

The two’s sweep was shared by five players: Kris Owen, Brian Haines, Andy Westwood, Mark Pedge and Mick Pollard.

* A men’s individual stableford was played last Thursday with Guy Rayson finishing in top spot with 37 points, one better than second-placed Mick Wilson with a level 36 points.

Vince King was some way back in third with 27 points, and the twos sweep was shared by Guy Rayson and Mick Wilson.

* A fun betterball stableford pairs was played on Saturday with Mike Catlin and Scott Cartwright’s score of 45 points winning the day.

Ray Smith and Guy Rayson were second with 42 points, while Phil Curtis and Steve Goddard took third place on countback from Malcolm Farrow and James Cartwright, both pairs cardign 41 points.

Guy Rayson once more shared the two’s sweep, this time with Steve Goddard.

* The ghosts, ghouls, skeletons and a visit from the Adams Family kept the Melton Golf Club busy as the ladies hosted their pre-Hallowe’en Scary Scramble Open.

On a fantastic, fun day, 88 ladies from 19 clubs took part in a Texas scramble and enjoyed tea, coffee, mulled wine and cakes at the halfway house.

The Spooks team of Jackie Wilson, Carole Stothart, Kylie Bullimore and Wendy Stewart, from Belton Woods GC won the day with nett 63.9.

The combined Melton/Park Hill Spiders Webb team of Julia Brown, Nancy Denny, Terri Wills and Sue Roberts fell just 0.1 behind in second with nett 64.0.

A Stone Unturned (Karen Middleton, Denise Waldron, Jane Gilmore and Jane Harby) from Melton and Stanton on the Wolds, were third with nett 67.2

The Loose Women quartet of Jane Baxter, Bev West, Margaret Thorpe and Karen Donnelly, from Ruddington Grange and Mapperley, had led for most of the day before they were knocked out of the top three by three of the last five teams, but took home the best visitors prize.

The fancy dressed team was The Adams Family, as judged by clubhouse and bar manager Angie Gauntlett.

Nearest-the-pin on the 14th went to Terri Wills (Park Hill), and longest drive on the 11th went to Kylie Bullimore (Belton Woods).

Prizes were presented by lady captain Bettyne Norton.
