Cliff Adcock snatched victory from Chris Shore at last Wednesday’s veterans’ match at Lakeview Fishery.
Shore, on golden peg 20 on the river pool, looked a clear winner, catching regularly as the rest of the field struggled to get the fish to feed.
With the next best weight on river being Dave Kent’s 35lb haul from peg one, and no weights over 30lb on stream, Shore’s total of 42lb seemed to have the match and money sewn up.
But he didn’t account for Adcock on river peg 15 who had some good-sized fish in his first net, while his second net had sufficient in to make 45lb overall and take top spot.
On stream, it was a close match between three anglers fishing alongside each other. Martin Quilter caught late in the match and was surprised to take the lake with 28lb ahead of Pete Cliffe and Roger Holmes, both with 25lb.
* Drawing peg 21, it was no surprise John Cooke (Notts AA) finished well ahead of the rest at Saturday’s match with 82lb.
Fishing maggot down the margins he caught regularly and never looked like being pressured by the rest.
Rob Taylor looks like he has got back into the swing of fishing Lakeview after a winter break and took second spot with 51lb, just a few ounces ahead of Ian Donalson (50lb) and a further pound ahead of Pete Sisson.
With reasonable weights for the rest, it proved to be a competitive match.
