John Cooke took top spot in the Veterans’ Winter League at Lakeview Fishery after the final two matches of the season were completed last week.
Cooke finished well clear of the pack, but competition was close below with Brian Orme in second spot from Roger Holmes in third.
Presentations will be made when the 19 anglers who have fished 15 or more matches meet in the final.
At last Wednesday’s match, Roy Toulson pulled off a commanding win from peg 30 on the canal pool.
Included in his 88lb catch was a 6lb-plus barbel which he has caught three times. Fishing maggot, Roy found the fish both across and down the track.
Second on the canal was John Cooke with 56lb, earning him the section money, while on the other bank, Steve Beckhurst (45lb) squeezed past the rest.
On Serpent pool, Mick Beckhurst found himself on peg two yet again and his experience paid off to win with 51lb from runner-up Bob Greenbury (41lb).
* The last match of the winter season was fished on Saturday and the weights were up, offering encouragement for the Summer League which starts next Saturday.
Dave Sewell finished well ahead of the rest on Serpent, taking 76lb from peg 10 on pellet down the track.
The second and third best weights on the lake were 47lb and 44lb, suggesting the fish have finally settled down on this lake.
The weights were more consistent on Canal, and it was Roger Holmes with 70lb who finished on top, as maggot again found the fish across and down the margins.
John Cooke was second with 61lb 13oz, just ahead of Pete Sisson (61lb 4oz) and fourth-placed Roy Toulson (61lb 1oz).
