The fish were clearly shoaled up on both canal and serpent pools for the veterans match at Lakeview last Wednesday.
Only a few anglers cashed in on the bigger weights as John Cooke (Notts AA) just managed to keep ahead of the rest with 77lb despite losing many fish which were not taking the bait confidently.
Martin Quilter finished the match in second place with 70lb taken from one spot, while Keith Daws completed the top three, all from the canal. Had Keith found the fish earlier he could easily have caught John and Martin but the whistle was blown too early for him.
The top three were on pegs 17, 19 and 21 on the back bank, while on the other bank Chris Shore was top weight with 47lb, just edging ahead of Ian Donaldson with 41lb.
It was far more of a struggle on Serpent where Mick Beckhurst dominated and took 64lb from peg two. He had to resort to some variations in bait presentation to entice the fish.
Steve Draper was second on the lake but could only manage 29lb.
* Another good turnout of anglers on Saturday meant two lakes were needed.
It was bad luck for those on Stream where the weights were well down. Roger Holmes took the lake with 18lb from John Cooke in second with 14lb.
Weights were far better on canal where Keith Daws again found himself on peg 17 and won with 74lb, well clear of the rest.
Fishing maggot across seems to be the method for canal, and second-placed Dave Ferrall used the same method to take 48lb, while Brian Orme was third with 36lb.
