John Ferneley College’s Year 9 softball team qualified for the county finals for the first time at Western Park, in Leicester.
Playing at the home of the Leicester Blue Sox baseball team, Ferneley opened against Rushey Mead and when last batter Alfie Buckley came to the mound, the Melton school found themselves 4-2 down with two on base.
Alfie was down two strikes when he hit the next pitch out of the park for a dramatic 5-4 Ferneley win.
The next two games brought comfortable wins against Ashby Ivanhoe and Lancaster Boys to set up a showdown with Hinckley Academy in the final.
It was a close game until three brilliant catches from Adam John, Ben Ritchie and Buckley turned the game Ferneley’s way.
They won comfortably, 7-6, with six batters still left.
Other members of the squad were Harry Street, James Phillips, Gabe Kehoe Long, Michael Ziemelis, Jacob Pope, Brad Jackson and Angus Wilbourn.
