The blank final scoreline didn’t do justice to the endeavour shown by Melton and Northampton in blustery conditions on Saturday.
Melton’s defence of Hunn, Weatherdon, Pearson and man-of-the-match Smith was outstanding throughout, providing excellent protection for stand-in keeper Snow.
A solid performance from the Welchs and Pateman in midfield set up several good opportunities for Melton’s young forward line, with John’s stick skills troubling the Saints defence, but clear chances were at a premium.
With the weather deteriorating in the second half the umpire’s task was made more difficult and Melton were on the end of some contentious decisions, but they kept battling.
They forced several penalty corners, but the surprisingly good Saints keeper made several crucial saves.
Melton’s dominance was illustrated by the fact Snow was only called on to make one save. A good game which Melton were perhaps unlucky not to win.
Melton: H. Snow, D. Pearson, S. Welch, Z. Whitaker, C. Smith, J. Welch, A. Wells, A. John, J. Harris, G. Hunn, G. Weatherdon, S. Pateman.
