Hamilton Tennis Club casts a spell with Hallowe’en tournament

There was a colourful turnout at Hamilton Tennis Club's Hallowe'en tournament EMN-170711-111601002

Following on from the successful junior Hallowe’en coaching sessions, Hamilton Tennis Club’s seniors staged a Hallowe’en night tournament with a difference.

With 24 players taking part, fun restrictions were thrown in, limiting how players could hit a shot, either only playing forehands or backhands, as well as the added difficulty of hitting the ball after two bounces.

Extra points were gained in darts, apple dipping and a blindfold version of sticking a pin in the pirate’s buttons to determine the winners.

The winning team was Jan Jackson, Jo Draper Moore, Ciaran Boylan and Jan Brookes, thanks mainly to Jo’s skill at darts.

Barrie Farnsworth and Jo Draper Moore came out as men’s and ladies’ overall tournament winners, and Eileen Merrison won the prize for best costume.

* On the league scene, Hamilton’s ladies’ first team of Jessi Jackson, Margaret Roskell, Sue Corfield and Margaret Heggs beat Oadby Granville Thirds by five sets to three.

Jessi and Margaret led the team with a maximum four sets, including a tie-break, and Sue and Margaret clinched the match-winning fifth set.

The ladies’ third team of Jan Jackson, Nicky Herbert, Pat Woolston and Linda Hallam drew 4-4 with Roundhill Seconds.

Pat and Linda won a set, while Jan and Nicky took three and lost a tie-break which would have clinched overall victory.

The men’s first team of Joe Jackson, Andy Douglas, Ben Catlin and Andy Stevens lost 5-3 to Market Harborough.

Joe and Andy won two sets, while Ben and Andy won one and lost a tie-break which would have clinched a draw.

Hamilton men’s fourth team of Joe Cunningham, Patrick Whenham Bossy, Steve Plaistow and Stuart Posnett lost 7-1 to Kegworth Seconds with Joe and Patrick winning the consolation set.

And the men’s third team of Graham Hall, Selwyn Carter, Steve Thompson and Joe Cunningham lost 8-0 to Melton Mowbray.
