John Cooke proved to be the golden boy when he took top spot and the golden peg money at Lakeview Fishery’s Wednesday veterans’ match.
He clinched the win late on having been pushed close by both Martin Quilter and Gary Smith who were pegged either side of him on the reef pool.
John started well, catching with banded pellet and maggot just off the island, but quiet periods allowed Martin and Gary to catch up. But in the last hour John found some quality fish at distance to clinch the match with 52lb.
Martin was second with 43lb after a quiet final half-hour, and Gary finished third with 40lb but could only find the smaller fish throughout the match. Chris Shore took the other section prize money with just 17lb.
It was one-sided on the oasis pool where Steve Beckhurst was a clear winner with 35lb from runner-up Brian Orme (21lb).
* Saturday’s vets match was also held on oasis which produced another one-sided result.
Mick Beckhurst finished in front with 53lb, using bread, maggot and pellet to catch regularly and land good-sized fish late on.
Runner-up Brian Orme (30lb) started well, but had to settle for the odd fish as sport grew tougher. Cliff Adcock looked a clear winner but a quiet second half left him third with 29lb.
There will be a match today (Christmas Eve) with additional prizes put up by the fishery.
* Steve Ward won an exciting and close open match on Sunday after landing 57lb 4oz from lagoon peg five.
He caught on maggot and pellet across, catching mainly F1s, skimmers and carp to top a field of 27 anglers.
* Lakeview is running a Boxing Day open match, draw at 9am. The overall winner will take home a sack of pellets, while every angler who competes will claim a bag of pellets.
