MELTON’S biggest problems occurred pre-match when a mix-up over pitch bookings meant the match started half-an-hour late.

But once play began Melton soon took control with Rosie Streater, Claudia Mills, Becca Pawley picking up any loose play in midfield and supporting the attack.

Claire Saffhill was regularly freed to help out in attack with Roxanne Durrant, Sophie Lecoyte and Katie Edwards, and the only surprise was that Melton couldn’t get the ball in the net.

Chances came and went with the Charnwood goalkeeper far busier than Margaret Roskell at the other end. Melton thought they had scored only for the chance to be ruled out for an infringement.

Eventually the pressure told and after several penalty corners Roxanne Durrant dived to turn a loose ball into the net.

After the re-start, Charnwood changed their formation and attacked more frequently and had a goal disallowed for an infringement, but Dodie Grant, Del Johnson and Hazel Dearson kept the ball away from the circle.

As Melton started to tire Charnwood created a few half-chances, but the defence stood firm. Melton forced several penalty corners in quick succession and from the third Becca Pawley made a clean stop and Claudia Mills rocketed the ball into the net to add a well-deserved second.

Melton face a tough proposition at Leicester University on Saturday.
