Melton Times sports editor Chris Harby made it back-to-back national titles at the UK Regional Press Awards on Friday.
Chris was up against five other journalists from England and Scotland who were shortlisted for the Weekly Sports Journalist of the Year, and was stunned to win for the second year running.
Chris (41) submitted three features covering 71-year-old karate champion Ede Smith, young England cricketer Tom Moores, and UK Transplant Games competitor Ian Preston.
The judges, made up of former editors and Fleet Street journalists, said: “Harby always presents a tremendous range of articles: a 71-year-old karate student - what’s not to like?
“A nice mix that did not rely on the mainstream, with great human interest stories making sports pages accessible – and aspirational – to all readers.”
Chris said: “I’m always very proud to be shortlisted, but to win was very humbling and totally unexpected. Thank-you to everyone who sent me kind messages on Friday.
“I’m lucky to meet such interesting people and privileged they trust me to write up their fascinating stories.”
