Marvels entered three teams in the league, with two having matches in the opening week.

After achieving promotions three years in a row, Melton Marvels first team made their Premiership debut against Blaby in a closely-fought match.

The Marvels fielded some new additions with two members away expecting babies and another travelling to Australia.

But with the young blood of Izzie Dooley and the invaluable experience of Sarah Morris joining the team, they ensured Marvels came away with a solid 47-40 win for a great start.

Star shooting duo Becky Greaves and Danni Donavan did not let any chances go by, and both were earmarked as players of the match by Blaby.

Centre court saw Nicola Spencer, Beth Draisey, Isla Cullingworth and Faye Meakin battle to turn the ball over and deliver them into the shooting circle, while Mary Copley acted as the last line of defence as Melton’s goal keeper.

Marvels Third team opened the season with new faces, but the game highlighted the team’s need for defenders to strengthen the team further.

With a shooter-heavy team, each quarter saw many changes of playing positions, and everyone showed great determination and willingness to adapt.

A dynamic first game ended in a draw against a challenging Blaby third team.

* Melton Marvels have also made a good start to the Thursday evening Rutland Netball League which began a few weeks ago.

Team Marvels A enjoyed two convincing wins, but were unfortunate to lose 32-26 on their third outing of the Winter League against well-drilled opponents who have played together for some time.

Having acquired some new players at the start of the season, Marvels A are still finding their feet as a team with things not falling in their favour in this game.

Everyone tried hard and played well, and with more experience of each other’s playing styles they will hope to quickly get back to winning ways.
