Melton Kings C lost their unbeaten record when they hosted Kettering Suns, the only other unbeaten team left in Leicestershire League Division Four.

The match started with the two equally matches teams vying for supremacy as points were traded in the opening minutes.

Tamosiunas led Kings’ scoring with strong drives to the basket, and Kettering answered with outside shooting as Melton edged ahead 5-4.

Both defences stepped up and there was no more scoring until the eighth minute when Kettering went on a six-point run. Whenham-Bossy hit back with a three-pointer, but the Suns led 12–8 at the end of the period.

Kettering opened the second quarter with a quick two points, but it was turning into a game of attrition as both defences held sway and prevented any scoring for another three minutes.

The visitors established a 19–13 lead, but Haffenden and Tamosiunas scored heavily to put Kings three points ahead going into the last minute of the half.

The lead was short-lived as Kettering’s Harris scored a three-pointer to tie the game at 22-all at half-time.

The third quarter continued in the same theme, with strong defence at both ends negating any big inside moves, and preventing scoring attempts.

Strong driving from Tamosiunas was backed up with outside shooting from Haffenden. Kettering turnovers allowed Hunt to fast break as Kings slowly built a four-point lead, but Kettering again scored late in the quarter to tie the match at 37 going into the final period.

Haffenden scored the first points as play restarted, but the game’s physicality began to tell on the smaller Kings squad as Kettering’s big men began to take control at both ends.

Kings battled on, but where held to only three further points as Kettering ran away with the final quarter to finish comfortable 63-42 winners.
