The youngsters again showed their skills with Jacob Welch and Callum Smith prominent in midfield, setting up some excellent chances for Whitaker and the lively John.

Melton forced several penalty corners and the experienced Taylor converted one to give Melton the lead.

The home side’s dominance continued in the second half with Worsley, having a much better second half, combining well with Steve Welch and Pearson.

Adam Wells made some very strong runs down the right wing and narrowly shot wide.

Melton clinched the match when Taylor’s unselfish pass found Whitaker who swept the ball home.

* Melton Ladies coasted past Roundhill in the Leicestershire Plate on a bitterly cold Saturday morning.

Melton were always on top and with Laura Robson, Heather Simpson, Jacqui Willatts and Kat Plimmer dominating defence and Charlotte Dunmore making some fine tackles Roundhill had few scoring opportunities.

Mandy Reader and player-of-the-match Alice Hatherley ran midfield and Melton had a plethora of chances, but were foiled by the Roundhill keeper.

Melton broke the deadlock when Georgie Hewitt picked a ball up on the left of the D and smashed the ball home.

Playing with the wind at their backs, Melton’s second half performance was even better with young Charlotte Cramphorn getting stuck in and giving the Roundhill left-back a torrid time.

The visitors increased the lead through Lisa Hewitt’s crisp drive and she followed up with her second to effectively seal the result.

Her hat-trick followed when a Roundhill defender turned Hewitt’s strike into her own net.

Melton then relaxed and Roundhill scored a consolation goal with Katie Boag given no chance from a crisp shot.

Melton: K. Boag, H. Simpson, J. Willatts, L. Robson, C. Dunmore, A. Hatherley, C. Cramphorn, M. Reader, G. Hewitt, L. Hewitt, K. Plimmer.
