Melton Fourth XI fell to a single goal loss for the second weekend running, but the 3-2 defeat offered more promising signs.

The hosts fielded six youngsters for the Central League Division Two match against a Leamington Spa team featuring at least four senior players who wouldn’t have looked out of place at Second XI level.

It soon became clear Melton would be under pressure, and Weatherdon, Curtis and Parker resolutely weathered the early storm in defence, to keep chances to a minimum.

With the midfield stretched, goalkeeper Cliffe was called upon regularly to keep the scoreline blank and the youngster was once again outstanding.

Shortly after half-time the visitors took the lead with a well-worked move and good finish, and made it 2-0 five minutes later from open play, their young centre forward taking his chances well.

The outlook seemed bleak when Leamington scored a third from a short corner, but this only served to spring Melton into action.

Rapid attacks from Cramphorn, Welch and Rockett in midfield created chances for Whittaker in the D, earning a penalty stroke which was confidently dispatched by the impressive Snow.

Soon after powerful forward play from Highton ended with a shot from Smith bouncing up off the keeper for Riley to volley the ball just over the line to maintain his recent scoring run.

Unfortunately, time ran out on the rampant home team and they were unable to get something from the match apart from the confidence they will take from the final 15 minutes.

Melton: L. Cliffe, M. Curtis, H. Snow, G. Weatherdon, C. Parker, M. Rockett, J. Highton, J. Welch, T. Cramphorn, C. Smith, Z. Whittaker, J. Riley.
