Melton Hockey Club’s Fourth XI suffered a heavy 9-0 defeat at promotion-chasing Hampton-in-Arden on Saturday.
The visitors started brightly, but the hosts soon settled and scored three quick goals, the first from a penalty flick, the second a deflected penalty corner and the third on the rebound.
The impressive Parker was temporarily sidelined by a blow to the forehead, to add to Melton’s poor luck. Jacob Welch was joined by his father Simon and they combined well to thwart Hampton, while offering a threat going forward.
Melton kept their heads up and Smith, Pateman, Whitaker and Cramphorn broke up Hampton’s midfield play, while the in-form Riley’s shot was deflected by the keeper’s trailing foot.
Melton tired after half-time against fit and disciplined hosts, and despite good performances from Exton, Weatherdon and Curtis, and numerous saves from stand-in keeper Shelton, Hampton added six further goals.
Melton: N. Shelton, C. Parker, G. Exton, G. Weatherdon, T. Cramphorn, S. Pateman, M. Curtis, J. Welch, S. Welch, C. Smith, J. Riley, Z. Whittaker.
