Melton Golf: Sassenachs see off Scots' challenge

The men's annual England versus Scotland match took place at Melton Mowbray Golf Club ended in a resounding win for the Sassenachs.

Honorary “Mc” players were borrowed from the English to play for the Celts and took their role seriously, dressed in trews and plaid plus fours. Unfortunately the Celts were beaten soundly by six-and-a-half to two-and-a-half, but club captain Jack “Mc”Inguanta laid down the gauntlet for 2017.

* A field of 80 players took part in Saturday’s men’s betterball stableford with only two points separating the top seven places.

Steve Brown and Martin Wheeler shot 41 points to take first place on countback from runners-up Ricki Curtis and Colin Kitchen.

A 40-point total secured third place for Phil Curtis and Steve Goddard, while Guy Rayson and Jim Dobbin were fourth on 39 points on countback over the last six holes.

Mike Catlin and Cameron Young, finished fifth, also with 39, on countback.

Twos sweep: Phil Millward, Ian Solloway, Mick Pollard, Matt Thomson and Kevin Robertson.

* The midweek stableford was won by Scott Cartwright with 37 points from runner-up Malcolm Farrow (33).

* The October Saturday Stableford was well supported by 70 players.

John O’Reilly won with 39 points, just a point ahead of Alex Fairbrother who was second on countback from Jon Baxter, both scoring 38.

Karl Yates finished fourth on countback from Mick Pollard with 37 points.

* Haydn and Liz Snow took first spot in the latest Monday Morning Mingles with nett 35.9.

Runners-up Eddie and Gay Cham (nett 36.4) edged Bob and Pat Barnes into third with nett 36.8.

* Lady golfers were treated to a Hallowe’en-themed day at Melton Mowbray Golf Club’s annual Scary Scramble Open competition.

Many competitors entered into the spirit of things by coming in costume, the best of which were the Ghostbusters from Ullesthorpe Golf Club.

The ladies played an 18-hole Texas scramble format which lady captain Liz Snow believed had been a great success.

The team of Drina Terzza, Ann Shuttleworth, Joanne Cheshire and Margaret Rippin won the day with 64.4 points, just ahead of runners-up Karen Middleton, Denise Waldron, Elaine Shelton and Jane Harby with 65.3.

Maggie Drake, Di Mellor, Vera Davies and Sue Barber were a shade behind in third with 65.5.
