Melton Golf Club stages first Matchplay KO finals

Melton Golf Club hosted their first-ever Matchplay Knockout Finals Day on Saturday between finalists from the club’s summer competitions.

Club captain Brendan Boyce announced the players onto the tee for the spectators.

Matt Catton beat John Burgess to win the men’s Muir Cup, while Adrian Green defeated Scott Cartwright to claim the Muir plate.

The seniors’ Singles Plate was won by John Squires who beat Eddie Cham, and Denise Waldron knocked out Maureen Stapleford to win the Senior Ladies’ Knockout.

The junior singles knockout for high handicaps was won by James Cartwright, after is victory over Will Thompson, and the ladies’ Muir Cup went to an extra play-off hole where Yvette Joyce edged out Leah Radford.

* The men’s midweek medal last Friday went to Rob Smith who carded a two-under handicap nett 68.

John Burgess was second with nett 69 and Steve Goddard (nett 70) came third. Rob Smith also won the best gross prize with a round of 72.

Chris Boulter and Steve Goddard scored the only two’s.

* Last Wednesday’s Lady Captain v Lady Vice-Captain match began in rain, but the weather soon cleared.

Captain Karen Middleton, partnered by Sue Millward, and vice-captain Liz Snow, partnered by Pauline Tagg, led their teams out.

In a nip-and-tuck match Karen and Sue won as the captain’s team won 3.5 to 1.5.
