Melton Fourths just lost out in an excellent game played in a really good spirit.

The visitors fielded two father-and-son combinations and their early play showed some good co-operation, while Melton’s youngsters worked hard again and played some attractive hockey.

Simon and Jacob Welch held midfield together, aided by determined efforts from Zak Whitaker and Adam Wells, and at the back the experience of Snow and Pearson, along with Calum Smith and Evan Shelton on the flanks, snuffed out any threats.

Melton worked the ball around well and up front Adam John and Joe Harris created good chances, but couldn’t get the final telling touch in an even first half.

It took a good penalty corner to give Sutton the lead with a crisp shot which gave Cliffe no chance.

Melton started the second half sluggishly and Cliffe had to make several first class saves before Sutton increased the lead with a hotly-disputed goal.

A high cross was allowed and Sutton eventually found the net after a scramble.

This stung Melton into action and they forced several short corners. From one, Nigel Shelton cleverly slipped the ball to Adam John who beat the keeper at the near post to score his first goal for the club.

The action flowed from end to end, but with Melton pushing for an equaliser, Sutton broke away to clinch the game with a third goal.
