Lakeview Fishery: Thick ice tests veterans

Have your say

The weather limited the number of anglers prepared to brave the elements at Lakeview Fishery last Wednesday.

With thick ice in places on the oasis pool, only five anglers lined up for the veterans match and they found the fishing very hard.

Martin Quilter decided to fish along the edge of the ice rather than break it, and using double maggot to depth he found two carp and a skimmer to bring 4lb 12oz to the scales and take first place.

Opposite him Chris Shore could only find a shoal of gudgeon taking micro pellet and caught regularly, but had no weight until the last minute where he tempted a small carp to push his weight up to 2lb 13oz. Chris finished just an ounce ahead of Alan Marshall who had looked like pushing Chris into third place.

John Cooke (Notts AA) proved unstoppable again at the veterans’ Saturday match.

Fishing marina peg one, his usual pellet method worked again and to finish well ahead with a total of 49lb. Brian Orme, fishing across alternating between pellet and maggot, was second with 29lb, and Mick Beckhurst had 26lb for third.

There were two more 20lb-plus weights but the rest struggled to catch.
